Blizzburd

It feeds on frozen seeds and the hardy insects it turns up by beating its wings to scour snow from the ground, a self-made blizzard that both uncovers food and hides the bird within it. It flocks for warmth and safety, and a startled flock explodes upward in a burst of whirling snow that leaves a predator blinking at an empty white haze. On the coldest nights the flock packs into a dense huddle in a sheltered hollow, rotating the outermost birds inward in slow turns so that none freezes, a shared vigil against the dark that keeps the whole company alive till dawn.
