It patrols the deep, fast channels as an apex hunter, using the current's own power to close on prey in sudden explosive rushes that the flow itself seems to accelerate. It reads the water's pressure and movement through its flanks with such precision that it hunts as well in the murkiest flood as in clear water. Solitary and territorial, it claims the richest stretches of moving water and drives off rivals in slashing, high-speed chases through the current. In spawning season it makes tremendous upstream runs, leaping falls that stop everything else, driven by an instinct as relentless as the water it has spent its whole life mastering.
