Kyraptor

It courses the flats at a ground-eating sprint, using its armored bulk to run larger prey to exhaustion rather than outmaneuvering it, and it finishes with a downward strike of that reinforced skull and those raking claws. It hunts most in the cool hours, retreating to shaded rock-clefts through the worst heat. Despite its ferocity it is a devoted parent, guarding a scrape of eggs with lethal vigilance and teaching fledged young to hunt in the same coursing style, a rare stretch of patience in an otherwise headlong life.
