Buzzlet

It feeds on the sweet sap that weeps from lightning-scarred trees, gathering where the charge is richest and squabbling over the best flows in tiny crackling dogfights. Its sting delivers a small but memorable jolt, enough to make a much larger creature reconsider, and a swarm defending its feeding-tree can drive off predators many times their combined size. At dusk the swarm packs into a hollow trunk and pulses gently with stored charge through the night, a warm humming glow that leaks out through every knothole.
